Microsoft and Meta Launch New 'Volumetric Apps' for Quest Headsets

During Microsoft's annual Build conference, it was announced that 'Windows Volumetric Apps' will be made available on Meta Quest headsets. This collaboration will enable Windows 365 and local PC connectivity on Quest headsets, allowing developers to expand their apps into 3D space.

Microsoft's Corporate Vice President of Windows and Devices, Pavan Davuluri, stated, 'We're strengthening our partnership with Meta to provide a top-notch Windows experience on Quest devices. Windows can utilize Quest's unique features to extend Windows apps into the 3D space.'

Developers can now register for the developer preview and gain access to a 'volumetric API.' According to Microsoft, this extension will help users enhance spatial understanding without exiting the app they are working in.

The sign-up page specifies that Microsoft is seeking developers who create or provide plugins for 3D Windows desktop applications, or customers who use 3D applications on Windows desktop and are interested in expanding them into 3D content with mixed reality.

Microsoft is also collaborating with Meta on a special edition Meta Quest VR headset inspired by Xbox. Additionally, the company launched Microsoft 365 productivity tools like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on the Quest headset in December last year.
