Apple introduces 'Tandem OLED' with dual OLED screens in new iPad Pro

Yes, you can incorporate an OLED screen into an iPad, but then you may sacrifice the brightness that iPad Pro users have become accustomed to. So, what is a computer maker to do in this situation? The solution is to stack two OLED screens on top of each other.

“We've always seen the iPad as a magical piece of glass,” stated John Ternus, SVP, Hardware Engineering, at Apple's iPad event in Cupertino on Tuesday. “With the new iPad Pro, we aimed to provide customers with an even more extraordinary visual experience."

Apple achieved this by introducing OLED technology to the iPad for the first time, addressing the issue of brightness that OLED screens typically lack. This was accomplished through the creation of the Tandem OLED screen, capable of delivering an impressive 1,000 nits of full-screen brightness for both SDR and HDR content, and 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness. According to the company, no other device offers this level of display quality.

Moreover, OLED technology allows Apple to have precise control over the color and luminance of each pixel within less than a millisecond, resulting in brighter highlights and deeper blacks in photos and videos, along with a significant improvement in motion content.

Collectively, Apple refers to this as the Ultra Retina XDR, featured in the new 11- and 13-inch models.

In addition to OLED, Apple has introduced nanotexture glass to the iPad Pro for the first time, previously only available on the company's high-end studio displays. Nanotexture glass is etched at a nanometer scale to maintain image quality and contrast while reducing glare from ambient light.
